Expresso Cover Series

Contacted in 2018 by the national newspaper group Expresso, I was invited to design a series of book covers – eight in total – for a series on the history of the Portuguese Monarchy. The series is entitled ‘O Essential dos Reis de Portugal’, in which one volume was made available to the public with the newspaper over a period of eight weeks. An accompanying slip case (archive box) to hold the collection was also designed. The final design was the result of a quite profound compromise on my behalf and is not my preferred choice of the designs submitted.

The final design was preceded by various other proposals, most of which worked better than the final outcome. Of all of these, the first proposal (below) remains my first choice.
