Ahab Edições
is a small independent publishing company based in Porto that we started working with in 2009. Their literary mission is to publish notable foreign language literature never before translated into Portuguese.

We were asked to design the company's graphic identity and to devise an editorial project. Part of the identity involved creating a logo – which we based on the figure of Captain Ahab as portrayed by Gregory Peck in the 1956 film 'Moby Dick'.

The bulk of the identity however (for any publisher) is expressed through the nature of the books themselves – the format, the typeface and setting, the page layout, the paper choice, and of course the covers. Our choice of typeface was the highly readable Dolly by the Dutch Type Foundry Underware.

Perhaps the most significant part of the editorial project – certainly the most visible – is the design of the covers. The guiding principle we devised was to constantly explore the rendering of the text – title and author – and to create individual interpretative designs for each title in which these elements form the basis of an textual illustration.
